CertainTeed Ridge Vent Installation: The Tampa Owner’s Guide
We stock and install CertainTeed-compatible ridge vent systems throughout Tampa, and a full ridge vent replacement on a typical single-family home here runs between $850 and $1,400 installed, including material and labor. Most ridge vent jobs take one day, and the majority of homeowners discover their vent has failed when they climb into the attic on a hot afternoon and feel stagnant air, or after a heavy summer storm when they notice water staining along the ceiling near an exterior wall. By the time you see the symptom, the vent has usually been compromised for months.
Ridge vent failure in Tampa doesn’t announce itself loudly. It shows up as a slow climb in your August cooling bill, a musty smell that lingers in the upstairs hallway, or granules from a deteriorating shingle collecting in the gutter directly below the ridge line. Travis Oakley has walked enough Tampa attics to know the pattern: the plastic baffle inside the CertainTeed vent warps in the Florida heat, the nail flange cracks, and suddenly the exhaust side of your roof’s ventilation system isn’t doing its job anymore.
Which CertainTeed Models This Applies To
We install ridge vent that matches the two CertainTeed product lines most common in Tampa homes: the CertainTeed Air Vent ShingleVent II and the CertainTeed Ridge Vent with Snow Country filter. The ShingleVent II is the workhorse here: it comes in 4-foot sections, nails directly to the ridge, and its external baffle design is what you’ll see on most CertainTeed asphalt shingle roofs installed in the last 15 years across Tampa neighborhoods like Carrollwood, Westchase, and New Tampa.
The compatibility gotcha most Tampa homeowners run into: the ShingleVent II is a 9-inch-wide vent designed for a specific ridge slot width. If your original installer cut the ridge slot at 1-1/2 inches, the vent breathes fine. If they cut it wider or narrower, the vent underperforms or the baffles don’t seat properly. We see that constantly on older Tampa homes where a previous owner had the roof done by a crew that didn’t check the CertainTeed spec sheet. When we match a replacement, we measure the actual ridge slot before we write the quote, not after we tear off the old vent.
For the OEM versus aftermarket question: CertainTeed’s own vent is a quality product that’s lasted many Tampa roofs a decade or more. But there are aftermarket ridge vents built to the same 9-inch footprint at a lower material cost, and they can be the right call on a roof that’s nearing the end of its service life anyway. We’ll show you both options, with prices, and let you decide. We’re not here to upsell you into OEM parts on a roof that’s got three years left.
Note: Brennan Roofing Co Tampa is an independent roofing contractor. We are not affiliated with CertainTeed Corporation, and we install ridge vent products compatible with CertainTeed roofing systems from several manufacturers, including GAF and Owens Corning.

Signs Your CertainTeed Ridge Vent Installation Is Failing
- Black streaks or discoloration along the ridge shingles. This usually means the vent’s baffles have failed and hot, moist attic air is being pushed out around the vent instead of through it. The moisture condenses on the underside of the ridge cap and breeds algae, which shows up as streaking on the shingles you can see from the curb.
- Granules piling up in gutters below the ridge line. A failing ridge vent allows wind-driven rain in under the cap shingles. Water gets under the ridge shingles, loosens the bond, and granules start shedding faster than they should. You’ll see the granular grit collecting in the gutter directly beneath the peak.
- Hot attic even in winter, or an AC that runs non-stop in August. Ridge vent is the exhaust half of your attic ventilation system. When it fails, the attic becomes a heat trap. Tampa attics with working ridge vent run about 15 to 20 degrees cooler than attics with failed vent. Your air conditioner notices the difference before you do, on your power bill.
- Rust on the heads of exposed nails along the ridge. CertainTeed ridge vents are nailed through a plastic nail flange. If the flange has cracked and allowed moisture to sit against those fasteners, the nail heads rust. That’s an early warning sign the vent itself is degrading.
- Water staining on ceilings near exterior walls after a storm. A cracked vent baffle lets wind-driven rain blow through the ridge slot and into the attic. The water runs down the roof deck and pools along the soffit line before dripping onto ceilings. If you only see the stain after a hard blow, your ridge vent is the likely source.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
| Ridge Vent Replacement Scope | Typical Tampa Price Range |
|---|---|
| Full ridge vent replacement (single-story, up to 40 linear feet of ridge) | $850 – $1,100 |
| Full ridge vent replacement (two-story or complex roof, 40+ linear feet) | $1,050 – $1,400 |
| Partial ridge vent section replacement (10 – 20 linear feet) | $350 – $600 |
What moves the price in Tampa: total linear feet of ridge line, roof pitch (steep roofs slow the work), whether the existing vent was nailed through shingles in a way that damages decking on removal, and whether your roof has a single ridge or multiple ridges separated by hips and valleys. We itemize every line: vent sections, cap shingles, fasteners, decking repair if needed, and labor. Nothing is buried in a lump-sum number.
Every ridge vent replacement we install in Tampa includes haul-away of the old vent material and fasteners, a final inspection of the ridge slot, and our 365-Day Done Right Promise. That’s a written guarantee on the installation for one full year. If the vent fails within that year, we come back and fix it at no charge. The price goes on paper before any work starts, and it doesn’t move at the door.
DIY or Call Us?
Replacing a ridge vent is a roof-peak job. You’re working at the highest point of the house, usually on a surface pitched at 4/12 or steeper, and you’re removing cap shingles and fasteners from a position where a slip means a long fall. We’ll be direct: this is not a weekend ladder project. The Tampa summer sun turns roof surfaces hot enough to burn exposed skin in minutes, and a fall from the ridge line of a two-story home is life-changing or worse.
What you can safely do from the ground or the attic: get up into the attic on a sunny day and look along the underside of the ridge slot with a flashlight. If you see daylight coming through cracks or gaps in the vent baffle, or if you can feel hot air blowing through the baffles when they should be exhausted passively, you’ve got a problem. Photograph what you can, note which side of the house, and call us. We’ll climb up, confirm the failure, and hand you a written quote before we touch a single shingle. Call (850) 750-9193 and we’ll walk the roof with you.
FAQs
A properly installed CertainTeed ridge vent in the Tampa climate typically lasts 10 to 15 years before the plastic baffles begin to warp or crack from UV exposure and heat cycling. The Florida sun is harder on plastic vent components than the manufacturers’ national averages suggest, and roof surfaces here routinely reach 150+ degrees in summer, which accelerates the degradation. If your vent is past the 12-year mark and showing any of the failure signs above, plan for replacement before a storm forces it.
Rarely. Small holes in the vent cap shingles can be patched, but once the plastic baffle system itself has cracked or warped, individual sections can’t be reliably sealed. The most honest answer we give Tampa homeowners is that a section replacement is the practical “repair” for isolated damage, and a full replacement is the correct call when the vent is old or multiple sections are compromised. Call (850) 750-9193 and we’ll tell you which situation you’re in after a roof walk, not before.
A full ridge vent replacement on a typical Tampa single-family home takes four to seven hours, including removal of the old vent, inspection of the ridge slot and decking, installation of the new vent, and re-capping with shingles. Most jobs are done in a single day, and we don’t leave the property until the old material is hauled away and the roof line is swept clean.
We stock 4-foot sections of 9-inch CertainTeed-compatible ridge vent, replacement cap shingles, and the correct fasteners on every service vehicle leaving our Tampa shop, so the most common replacement jobs are completed the same day without a second trip to a supply house. For larger or unusual ridge configurations, we pull the material the same morning before we arrive. Call (850) 750-9193 for a free estimate, and the quote will be in your hands before any work starts.
