CertainTeed Underlayment & Deck Repair: The Tampa Owner’s Guide
We stock and install CertainTeed-compatible underlayment and repair roof decking throughout Tampa, with most deck repairs running $400 to $1,200 installed depending on how many sheets are rotted and how much underlayment has to come up. Our trucks carry CertainTeed DiamondDeck, RoofRunner, and WinterGuard, so a typical underlayment section repair is done same-day once we’re on site. Most Tampa homeowners discover the problem the same way: a ceiling stain appears after a summer afternoon storm, or a roofer doing an estimate peels back a shingle and finds the decking underneath has turned to mulch.
We’re an independent roofing contractor in Tampa, not a CertainTeed dealer or affiliate. That matters because we’ll tell you straight when a generic high-quality underlayment does the same job for less, and when the CertainTeed label is worth paying for.
Which CertainTeed Models This Applies To
CertainTeed makes three underlayment lines we install and repair in Tampa: RoofRunner (synthetic, their entry-level), DiamondDeck (synthetic, high-traffic rated, thicker), and WinterGuard (peel-and-stick, self-adhered ice and water barrier). Each one is a different animal, and pairing the wrong underlayment to the wrong roof in Florida is a mistake we correct on other contractors’ jobs regularly.
Here’s what you need to know about compatibility. DiamondDeck and RoofRunner are both synthetic, but DiamondDeck is roughly 30% thicker and holds up better under foot traffic during a re-roof. If a crew tears off your old shingles and plans to leave the underlayment exposed for a week before the new shingles go on, DiamondDeck is the right call. RoofRunner exposed to Tampa sun and rain for more than a few days starts to degrade. WinterGuard goes in valleys, around chimneys, and along eaves where water backs up in a storm. A lot of Tampa roofs we repair were built with WinterGuard only at the eaves and felt everywhere else, which is exactly why the decking rotted along the rakes.
The OEM-vs-aftermarket decision on CertainTeed underlayment is simpler than people think. CertainTeed warrants its underlayment only when installed as part of a complete CertainTeed roofing system, and that warranty is prorated and registered. For a spot repair on a roof that already exists, we typically recommend an equivalent synthetic like GAF FeltBuster or Owens Corning ProArmor if the homeowner isn’t married to the CertainTeed label. They perform identically in Tampa conditions for a section repair, and often cost 10-15% less. Where we do insist on CertainTeed is WinterGuard. That peel-and-stick product is genuinely better than most generic ice and water shields we’ve pulled up intact versus peeled apart.

Signs Your CertainTeed Underlayment & Deck Repair Is Failing
- Ceiling stains that appear after a storm, not during it. This is the classic sign that water is getting through the decking and underlayment, sitting in the attic insulation, and seeping down slowly. By the time the stain shows, the decking has usually been wet for months.
- Spongy spots when a roofer walks the roof. Rotted OSB or plywood decking loses its stiffness. If you can see the roof flex from the ground when someone walks on it, the decking underneath is done. We find this most often in Tampa neighborhoods with older homes, like Seminole Heights and Riverside Heights, where original decking from the 1980s and 1990s has finally given out.
- Underlayment visible at the eaves, curling or peeling away from the deck. Once the underlayment edge lifts, wind-driven rain gets under the shingles and against the bare wood. On Tampa roofs with low slopes, we see this failure along the lower two feet of the roof plane constantly.
- Gritty granules in the gutters after every rain. While that’s technically a shingle issue, the reason it matters for underlayment is that Tampa homeowners ignore it, the shingles thin out, and the underlayment becomes the only thing standing between the wood deck and a rainstorm. Underlayment was never designed to be the only waterproof layer.
- A musty attic smell with visible dark rings on the underside of the decking. That ring means water has been pooling against the wood. The decking is wicking moisture every time it rains, and no amount of attic ventilation fixes it once the rot starts.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In Tampa, expect to pay $400 to $1,200 for a typical underlayment and deck repair on a standard asphalt shingle roof. Here’s how that breaks down:
- Decking replacement: $75 to $110 per 4×8 sheet removed and replaced, including the wood, fasteners, and labor. A small repair is one or two sheets. A neglected roof can need six or eight.
- Underlayment section replacement: $150 to $400 depending on square footage and whether it’s synthetic or peel-and-stick. Most partial repairs are under two squares, which is 200 square feet.
- Shingle re-installation over the repair area: Usually included when we’re already on the roof, unless the existing shingles are beyond reuse and need matching replacements.
The range widens when the rotted decking extends to the fascia or rafter tails, which adds framing work. If the underlayment failure happened along a valley, we re-cut the valley with new WinterGuard and new metal valley flashing, which runs $200 to $350 by itself. Every Brennan Roofing job in Tampa starts with the same thing: a written price before any work begins, with the decking, underlayment, fasteners, and labor broken out by line item. If we find additional rot once the shingles come up, the written price for that contingency is already in the quote. It doesn’t move at the door.
Every repair carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise, in writing. If the repair fails within a year, we come back and fix it at no charge. No fine print, no prorated nonsense.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely check a few things from the ground or a ladder without getting on the roof. Look at the eave edges for underlayment curling away from the wood. Check the gutter for excessive asphalt granules. Shine a flashlight in the attic and look at the underside of the decking for dark stains. That tells you if you likely have a problem.
What we don’t recommend is pulling shingles yourself. Once you lift a shingle, you’ve broken the seal, and putting it back down wrong creates a leak that didn’t exist before. Torn underlayment cannot be patched with roof cement and a scrap. It needs the damaged section cut out, the decking inspected, new underlayment lapped correctly over the existing material, and shingles reinstalled with the proper nail pattern. Get the overlap wrong and you’ve built a dam that sends water sideways into the roof instead of down it. We’ve walked too many Tampa roofs where a homeowner or a handyman “fixed” an underlayment tear six months earlier and the decking underneath is already black. We’d rather give you a straight answer over the phone for free than have you create a bigger repair. Call (850) 750-9193 and describe what you’re seeing. If it sounds like a decking or underlayment issue, we’ll schedule an estimate and put the price on paper before anything gets touched.
FAQs
Under normal circumstances, DiamondDeck and RoofRunner last 25 to 50 years when properly installed under shingles. The problem in Tampa isn’t the underlayment aging; it’s that once shingles fail or flashing leaks, water sits against the underlayment and the decking, and the whole assembly rots from the underside. If the underlayment is doing its one job, which is keeping water off the decking until the shingles shed it, the weak point on a Florida roof is almost always the flashing, not the underlayment. Call (850) 750-9193 if you suspect water is getting behind your underlayment, and we’ll trace it properly.
Small tears, under a foot, can sometimes be repaired by cutting out the damaged section and lapping a new piece over it. Anything larger, or any underlayment that has been exposed to weather for more than a few weeks, needs to be removed and replaced as a full section. In Tampa, the sun chews through exposed synthetic underlayment fast, and patching sun-brittled material is throwing good money after bad. Ask for the repair cost and the replacement cost side by side before you decide.
Most single-section repairs that involve one to four sheets of decking and a section of underlayment are completed in a single day, from tear-off to shingle reinstalaltion. If weather is coming through or the repair turns out to be larger than expected, we may need to tarp the roof overnight and finish the next morning. We never rush a decking repair in Tampa because the afternoon storm will find any gap we left. Walk the finished job with us before we leave. If it’s not squared away, we’re not done.
Our Tampa trucks carry DiamondDeck, RoofRunner, and WinterGuard in standard widths as well as GAF and Owens Corning synthetic equivalents. If your repair calls for a CertainTeed product we don’t have on the truck that day, we source it same-day from local Tampa suppliers in most cases. You’ll know before we start what’s going on the roof and what it costs.
