GAF Shingle Repair: The Tampa Owner’s Guide
GAF shingle repair in Tampa typically runs $350 to $900 installed for a small to moderate repair area, depending on roof pitch, accessibility, and how many shingles failed. We stock GAF-compatible shingles on our trucks for same-week service across Hillsborough County. Most homeowners discover the failure two ways: a shingle or two in the yard after a storm, or a water stain on the ceiling that traces back to a cracked or blown-off shingle above it. If you’re seeing granules in your gutters after heavy rain, that’s the shingle surface breaking down, and it’s worth a closer look before the next Tampa downpour finds its way underneath.
Which GAF Models This Applies To
We repair the full GAF architectural and 3-tab lineup you’ll find on Tampa roofs: Timberline HDZ, Timberline UHDZ, Timberline NS, Timberline American Harvest, Royal Sovereign, and Glenwood. The part that matters is matching the shingle’s size, exposure, and color grade. GAF architectural shingles are 13-1/4 inches wide by 39-3/8 inches long with a 5-5/8 inch exposure. 3-tab Royal Sovereigns run 12 inches by 36 inches with a 5 inch exposure. That 3/8 inch difference on architectural width catches a lot of weekend repair attempts off guard, and the result is a patch that doesn’t seat flush with the surrounding courses.
Color matching is the trickier part. GAF uses color codes on the shingle wrapper, usually printed along the bottom edge. If you have the original bundle or a leftover shingle in the garage, there’s a code like “HDZ-0099” or “THZ-0026” stamped on it. If you don’t, we can pull a sample and match it. Aftermarket shingles exist and they’re cheaper, but for a repair that’s supposed to disappear into the roof, OEM GAF is the call. The color lots differ enough between manufacturers that a CertainTeed “weathered wood” is not a GAF “weathered wood.” We want an exact match, not a close one. Brennan Roofing Co Tampa is an independent contractor and not affiliated with GAF, but we install GAF products daily and keep common Tampa colors stocked on every truck.

Signs Your GAF Shingle Repair Is Failing
- Granules collecting in gutters or at downspout bases. GAF shingles lose surface granules as the asphalt weathers. Heavy granule loss means the shingle’s protective layer is gone and the mat underneath is absorbing water and UV. In Tampa’s sun, that breakdown accelerates fast on south and west-facing slopes.
- Curling or lifting shingle edges. This usually starts at corners. The shingle’s self-seal strip loses grip over time, especially after years of Tampa’s heat-cool cycle. A lifted edge catches wind and starts a peeling pattern that worsens with every storm.
- Shingles in the yard after a storm. That’s not a reusable shingle, it’s a warning sign. If one blew off, its neighbors took the same wind load. The roof needs inspection for loose tabs and exposed nail lines before the next front comes through.
- Dark stains or soft spots on the ceiling. Water travels. A stain on the ceiling doesn’t mean the failed shingle is directly above it. It means water found a path down through the decking, and by the time you see it, the leak has been working for a while.
- Missing shingle tabs that expose the nail strip. Once the nail line is visible, water hits bare decking with every rain. Nails rust, holes open up, and the decking starts rotting. This is the point where a $350 shingle swap becomes a sheathing repair.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
Tampa shingle repair pricing we write on every estimate:
- Small repair, 1 to 6 shingles: $350 to $550
- Moderate repair, 7 to 20 shingles plus a new valley or flashing section: $550 to $900
- Larger repair with decking patch: $900 to $1,500
Every number includes the shingles, underlayment patch, nails, disposal, and our labor to get up there and do it right. The price goes on paper before any work starts, under the Garrison Standard, and it does not move at the door. If the repair fails within one year, the 365-Day Done Right Promise means we come back and fix it at no charge. In writing. What drives the range is mostly the roof’s pitch and the number of stories. A 12/12 pitch in Seminole Heights takes longer and costs more to access safely than a 4/12 ranch in Carrollwood. We’ll tell you exactly what we see, not a range that swells once the crew shows up.
DIY or Call Us?
What you can do yourself: count the damaged shingles, check the gutters for granules, and take photos from the ground. Those photos help us quote accurately before we even climb up. What we recommend against: walking a Tampa roof with a bundle of shingles on your shoulder. Florida heat makes shingles soft and slick. If you slip and the roof is steep, it’s a hospital trip. If you nail into the wrong spot, you’ve created a new leak. High-tension work and steep-pitch work belong on a professional’s schedule. If you’re comfortable on a shallow roof and know what you’re doing, a single shingle swap is doable. If the shingle is on a second story, near a valley, over a leak, or you’re not certain about the cause, call us at (850) 750-9193 and we’ll get a tech out to look at it. Most GAF repair inspections are straightforward and we give you the written price before anything starts. If it’s not squared away, we’re not done.
FAQs
GAF rates Timberline HDZ for 25 years to lifetime depending on the line, but Tampa’s climate is rough on asphalt: intense UV, daily summer thunderstorms, and hurricane wind cycles. In our experience on Tampa roofs, architectural GAF shingles realistically perform well for 15 to 20 years here before repairs become frequent enough to justify re-roofing. The south and west exposures age fastest. Call (850) 750-9193 and we can tell you honestly where your roof is in that timeline.
Isolated shingle damage can almost always be repaired if the surrounding roof is still sound. We’ll replace the failed shingles, check the underlayment below them, and reseal the surrounding tabs. If the damage is widespread, the decking is soft, or the shingles are brittle across multiple slopes, a repair just buys time. You’ll get a written recommendation either way, not a push toward replacement.
Most single-area shingle repairs take 1 to 2 hours once the crew is on the roof. A larger repair across multiple slopes or including valley flashing runs half a day. We schedule repairs within the week in most cases, and if you have an active leak, we’ll get someone out as soon as a crew frees up.
We keep the most common GAF colors and lines stocked on our Tampa trucks: Timberline HDZ in weathered wood, barkwood, and charcoal, plus a rotation of other colors. If your roof is a less common color or a specialty line like Glenwood, we’ll pull a sample, order the match from our GAF supplier, and schedule the repair once the material is in hand. No trips to a big-box store hoping the shelf stock matches your roof.
